Well House Landscaping

Our well house has been an eyesore on our property for a while now. It was another awkward area with a difficult hill which harbored overgrowth because it often got neglected. I hated that hill. You can’t mow it, and you can barely stand on it to use a weed trimmer.

Here’s our lovely hill on the West side of the well house:

In an effort to make the well house more accessible, Sam built a staircase on the West side.

He had recently taken a load of items to the dump, and came across some 4×4 timbers, which turned into this project!

Sam started out by clearing the land, and measuring out the steps to dig their foundation. (His Mom Joyce, and our kitty Beluga were supervising)

Then the black weed barrier went down.

And the first few steps…

…eight… and done!

After the stairs were placed, Sam looked around, and thought the rest of the area around the well house could use some improvement. So out came all the weeds!

It’s funny how a good before photo alway seems to skip past me, so here’s a shot from July 15th 2018 that gives you an idea how the land looked on the East side of the well house where giant stone steps had been placed on the right before we bought the house. (The little stones on the bottom of the picture is another One of Sam’s stone barriers he built in 2018):

And, after removing weeds:

We are starting to get somewhere here.

Sam poured some cement by the corner of the well house to improve the function of the wood chips when they get poured- and it’s a great weed barrier for an awkward to weed area. (We seem to have a lot of those!)

Next, the black weed barrier was laid out. We’ve been using a lot of that stuff this summer!

And after 2 trips to the dump, where they charge $10 for a yard of wood chips, this project was finished!

What do you think?
